10 Years Ago Today

On May 25, 2002 Wendi and I were married in the chapel at Mars Hill College where we met.  It has been an amazing 10 years with her by my side, and I’m looking forward to many more years together!

Uprising Recap (4/25)

Here’s what went down at Uprising last night:

  • I welcomed everyone to Uprising using this awesome app!  We’ve been using this app to make videos the past couple of weeks, and it’s been a lot of fun for us and the students.
  • Set List: Happy Day, Not Ashamed
  • This was our last week in a series called Big Time Basics.  In this series we’re taking a look at some important things to build our lives on.  This week we looked at Evil.  Why does evil happen, and why doesn’t God stop it?  It was a pretty heavy topic and a tough one to teach on, but helpful to a lot of our students.
  • Main Text: Genesis 1 & 3
  • Main Point: God wins in the end!

I’m Sorry

There are times in ministry when we just seem to blow it with a student.

  • We call them out in front of everyone and embarrass them.
  • We get onto them for something they didn’t do.
  • We lose our temper and get mad at them. Etc.,

Maybe it’s only happened to me, but over my years in ministry there have been times when I’ve blown it with a student.

When this happens the greatest thing that we can do is to say I’m Sorry!

A couple of weeks ago I blew it with a student and had to make sure that I told him I was sorry.  I had overreacted, and that I wanted him to know that I really was sorry for getting onto him like I did.  I told him that I really did enjoy him being a part of our ministry, and that I hope he would be able to forgive me.

I think a lot of times we know we’ve blown it and don’t say we’re sorry is because we think their young and they’ll get over it.  But, our students need to understand the importance of saying sorry, and the importance of forgiveness.

Who in your ministry do you need to pull aside and say I’m sorry to?

  • Main Text: John 1:1-14

Take Time to Refresh

A couple of weeks ago we put on an event in our community called the MIX.  This was an amazing weekend for our students, our church, and our community.  While I loved every minute of the MIX when it was done I was in need of some much-needed rest.

Here are a few ideas to help you REFRESH after a big weekend:

1. REFRESH Physically – Sleep in or take a nap the day after a big weekend.  I wasn’t able to sleep in on that Monday, but I took some time in the afternoon for a nap.  I needed some extra rest after pushing so hard for a couple of weeks.

2. REFRESH Spiritually – Spend some extra time in God’s word.  Many times after a big weekend you can feel empty because of giving and serving all weekend long.  Spend some extended time in God’s word and prayer.

3. REFRESH Mentally – Spend some time reading a fiction book or doing an activity that you really enjoy.  I spent some time reading the third book of the Hunger Games trilogy.  I don’t do this often enough, but it was relaxing to read something just for the fun of it.

4. REFRESH Relationally – Spend some time with your spouse and kids.  It was nice to hang out with Wendi in the morning, drink some coffee, and just talk about how we saw God work throughout the weekend.  Both kids are young and only go a half day to school so when we picked them up from school we took them out to lunch and just had some fun times together.

As student pastors we need to make sure that we take time to REFRESH after big events and weekends.  Fight the temptation to push on through by taking the time to REFRESH.

How do you REFRESH after a busy weekend?
