“Britney”

Over the past year, or more, Wendi and I have watched the way the media has bashed Britney, Lindsay, and others.  Both of us have felt bad for those girls because no one seemed to be there giving them good advice, and trying to really help them.  When I ran across this song and video earlier today I knew I needed to share it.  Bebo Norman explains more about his song.

“‘Britney’ is a song about what our culture says and does to young women these days,” explains Norman. “It’s about the lies we tell them about fame and money and what’s beautiful and what will give them life. It’s an apology for those lies. But more than that, it’s an invitation to the truth about a God who is bigger than the pain this world so often leaves them in.”

Here are the lyrics:

Britney im sorry for the lies we told
we took you into our arms and then left you cold
britney im sorry for this cruel cruel world
we sell the beauty but destroy the girl
britney im sorry for your broken heart
we stood aside and watched you fall apart
im sorry we told you fame would fill you up
and money moves the man so drink the cup

i know love goes around the world we know
and you never see it coming back
you never see it coming back
i know love goes around the world we know
and you never see it coming back
but i can see it coming back for you
yes coming back for you

britney im sorry for the stones we throw
we tear you down just so we can watch the show
britney im sorry for the words we say
we point the finger as you fall from grace

i know love goes around the world we know
and you never see it coming back
you never see it coming back
and i know love goes around the world we know
and you never see it coming back
but i can see it coming back for you

yeah, its coming back for you, yeah, its coming back for you, yeah, its coming back for you, yeah

britney i do believe that love has come
here for the broken
here for the ones like us

i know love goes around the world we know
and you never see it coming back
you never see it coming back
and i know love goes around the world we know
and you never see it coming back
but i can see it coming back

i know love goes around the world we know
and you never see it coming back
you never see it coming back
i can see it coming back for you

its coming back for you… yeah

Great song! I hate the way the media rips these young girls apart! They do make mistakes, but who are we to judge! Someone (like a parent) should have began protecting these girls long ago from the issues that their fame and fortune could cause. I’m not saying that I agree with their choices, but the whole world watches every mistake that they make. No one deserves to have the whole word watch while they lock themselves in the bathroom with their child like Britney. God’s grace is for these girls too! Go Bebo!!!!!!

Okay… so that comment is from me, Wendi…I guess I am logged in to Adam’s blog as Adam somehow…I don’t know!!! Sorry!

  3. I read a blog about a year ago by Beth Moore’s daughter Amanda (on Beth’s Website), around the time Britney shaved her head, Lindsey was in treatment, Anna Nicole had died, etc. In it Amanda made the following observation that was like a light-bulb to me.
“What if the common denominator [to a celebrity's self-destruction] is not solely their individual self-destructiveness, but what if it includes the destructiveness of American Idolatry? It seems to me that idolizing a human being isn’t just unhealthy and destructive for the one doing the idolizing, but also for the one being idolized. If there is any truth in this notion, namely, that it simply is not healthy (or to use politically incorrect language, it is simply morally wrong) for a person to be worshipped and idolized, then the American population is partly to blame for the broken state and the troubled fate of so many bold and indeed talented souls.”
I was struck by Amanda’s comments because truly humans were NEVER meant to be worshipped, only God. When we place people in a role that only God himself was intended to fill we are only setting them up for failure and in the case of so many…self-destruction.
“They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen” (Romans 1:25).

  4. That’s a great song and video, thanks for sharing!

  5. Funny, but as sorry as I feel for celebrities like Britney and Lindsey, I guess I never looked at it quite like this.

I remember watching a documentary on PBS about the press, and how the press influences public opinion, especially as it relates to celebrities. One case in point was how the press treated FDR. Photograhs of him were to stress his strength and leadership, not his disability. Press members who tried to go against this tenet were chastised. The goal of the press was to promote a good and well-being. And American people respected, not worshiped, their leader. Wow, has that changed. When photographers and tabloids get hold of public figures today, the sky is the limit as to what gets photographed and printed. And we, the public, support this with our money and, if we are honest, with our worship. (The media would not keep doing it if it were not lucrative.) The only answer for our society today is Jesus Christ. The Bible says that God is jealous, and will have no other gods before Him. Is He showing us this by tearing down the celebrities we tend to worship?

  6. Adam,

Thanks for showing grace to such a troubled heart. We need more leaders like you in an arena where it is so easy to point fingers and condemn…

    Peace,
    Jeremy

  7. i like that cause it fits me greatly … love the song
